On this #ThrowbackThursday, we're going to an epic year. In 1980, none other than Andy Warhol (likely the most famous Pop artist) paid a visit to the Art Deco District in South Beach! In March of that year, Warhol called the Miami Design Preservation League's office and asked for a tour of the Art Deco buildings. When he came from NYC, Warhol was personally shown around by another legend -- MDPL founder Barbara Baer Capitman and by the then-Executive Director Diana Camber, who would later lead the Bass Museum of Art. The visit sparked a media frenzy! Maybe another celebrity of that magnitude wants an MDPL tour?! These are 1980 black-and-white photos from MDPL’s archives of Warhol at The Amsterdam Palace Apartments — now known as Villa Casa Casuarina (formerly the Versace Mansion), at 1116 Ocean Drive. This morning, representatives from Miami Beach city government, local organizations and event planners gathered for a meeting ahead of the Art Deco Exhibition and Centennial Celebration at Galeria Ocean Drive, opening on June 12! Have you visited The Boot Camp in Paradise: WWII in Miami Beach? That’s where this beautiful exhibit will go up, right by the Art Deco Museum and Welcome Center on 10th Street and Ocean Drive. This outdoor exhibition right in the heart of the Art Deco District will also include events over the course of seven months.
