Calistoga Orthodox Wines
Overview
Calistoga Orthodox Wines is a US nonprofit organization, registered under the EIN 27-5412455, aimed at producing and distributing sacramental wine for Orthodox Christian liturgy. Located in Calistoga, California, it operates within the renowned Napa Valley region.
History and Purpose
Established in 2011, Calistoga Orthodox Wines is a joint venture between Holy Assumption Monastery (OCA) and St. Simeon Russian Orthodox Church (ROCOR), with the goal of creating high-quality sacramental wine for use in the Divine Liturgy. This collaboration was encouraged by the close proximity of the two communities and the opportunity to utilize Napa Valley's prestigious wine-making capabilities. The organization continues to operate under the direction of the sisterhood after the St. Simeon Parish was closed and sold in 2023.
Wine Production
The wines are made from 100% organically grown California Malbec grapes, adhering to traditional Orthodox standards: the wine must be sweet, red, and free from additives or fortification. The production process involves blessings by Orthodox clergy, ensuring the wine meets the specifications set by the Ecumenical Councils and aligns with historical preferences, such as those attributed to Tsar Peter the Great and Tsar Nicholas II.
Financial Support
Calistoga Orthodox Wines serves as a financial support mechanism for Holy Assumption Monastery and St. Simeon Orthodox Church. All proceeds from wine sales are dedicated to supporting these religious institutions. The organization operates as a 501(c)3 corporation, allowing donors to contribute with tax benefits.
Products
Calistoga Orthodox Wines offers two main products: the Premium Chalice Wine, which has received high praise for its quality, and the California Chalice Wine, recognized for its affordability and robustness. These offerings connect contemporary Orthodox parishes with traditional sacramental wine-making practices.
Ministry and Mission
The fundamental mission of Calistoga Orthodox Wines is to provide high-quality, traditional Orthodox chalice wine while supporting the community and religious organizations in Calistoga. This nonprofit also adheres to the principle of offering the finest harvest as an offering to God, aligning with Orthodox Christian values.
