JOES PLACE CORPORATION
Overview
JOES PLACE CORPORATION is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing a supportive home environment for unhoused high school students in the Maplewood Richmond Heights School District. The organization aims to foster an atmosphere that encourages academic success, personal growth, and a smooth transition into adulthood.
History
JOES PLACE CORPORATION was established in July 2006 as a collaborative effort between the MRH School District, Crossroads Presbyterian Church, and other local churches. The MRH School District purchased a house close to the school, which became Joe’s Place. By September 2006, a part-time program director was appointed, and house parents were hired. The first residents moved into Joe’s Place in January 2007.
Mission and Programs
The mission of Joe’s Place is to offer a stable and nurturing environment that allows students to thrive academically and personally. The organization provides its residents with regular meals, guidance, and emotional support. Two qualified house parents live on site, overseeing the daily operations and serving as role models for the students. Community volunteers play a significant role in providing meals and acting as mentors and tutors.
Clinical interventions and therapy are available to residents based on their individual needs. A case manager meets regularly with residents and house parents to address any issues that arise.
Post-Graduation Support
In 2019, Joe’s Place initiated an alumni program to support graduates in their transition to independent living. The program offers assistance with post-secondary education, housing during breaks, health and wellness services, career development, and financial planning. The goal is to ensure that alumni maintain stable, fulfilling lives and avoid homelessness.
Financials
JOES PLACE CORPORATION relies primarily on contributions and program services for its revenue. In recent years, contributions have accounted for approximately 70% of its total revenue, with program services making up about 30%[1].
Governance
The organization is governed by a Board of Directors, which oversees strategic planning and operational management. Key personnel, including house parents and administrative staff, are essential to the daily functioning of Joe’s Place[1].
Impact
Since its inception, Joe’s Place has supported over 35 students, with the majority successfully completing high school or pursuing post-secondary education. The organization continues to serve as a vital resource for vulnerable students in the community, providing them with the stability and support needed to succeed in school and beyond.
