Description

The Chapel Restoration Inc.

The Chapel Restoration Inc., a nonprofit 501c3 organization (EIN: 237245146), is dedicated to the restoration and maintenance of a historic chapel in Cold Spring, New York. The chapel, built in 1833 in the Greek Revival style, was originally known as the Chapel of Our Lady and served as a place of worship for Irish immigrants working at the West Point Foundry. It was designed by Thomas Kelah Wharton, a young English immigrant at the time.

History

The chapel played a significant role in the community until it was abandoned in 1906. Over the years, it fell into disrepair and suffered significant damage, including a fire in 1927. In the early 1970s, a group of community members, including actress Helen Hayes, came together to restore the chapel. The restoration was completed under the supervision of architect Walter Knight Sturges, and the chapel was rededicated as an ecumenical site in 1977.

Mission

The mission of The Chapel Restoration Inc. is fourfold:

  • Preservation: Maintain and preserve the historic landmark and its Hudson River site.
  • Contemplation: Protect it as a place of quiet contemplation and repose.
  • Community Events: Provide a setting for significant occasions and events.
  • Cultural Enrichment: Offer programs that enrich the cultural life of the community.

Programs and Features

The chapel hosts the renowned Sunday Music Series, featuring local and international musicians, and the Sunset Reading Series. It also offers a serene setting for weddings, christenings, commitment ceremonies, vow renewals, and memorials. The chapel is equipped with a custom-built tracker action pipe organ and an antique Steinway Grand Piano, once owned by the Livingston family. The site provides spectacular views of the Hudson River and is within walking distance of the historic village of Cold Spring.

Financial Overview

The organization's financial operations include revenues and expenses typically ranging between $100,000 and $130,000 annually. As of recent records, The Chapel Restoration Inc. has total assets amounting to over $700,000 and no reported liabilities[4].

Recognition

The Chapel Restoration is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, recognizing its historical significance and architectural style. It serves as a cultural and educational resource for the community, fostering a connection between history, art, and nature.
