“I paint flowers so they will not die.” - Frida Kahlo 🌷 Join us for this month’s BIPOC Free Verse: Floral Poetics with @gauriawasthi next Tuesday, June 3rd over Zoom 💐 Flowers have occupied the consciousness of poets from time immemorial – most famously William Wordsworth’s widely quoted “Daffodils.” In this workshop, we will close-read and expand our understanding of poems with central flower motifs by Issa, Rainer Maria Rilke, Basho, Li-Young Lee, Sylvia Plath, Louise Glück, Paisley Rekdal, Noor Hindi, Esther Lin, and Hanif Abdurraqib. Participants will write their flower poems by understanding how these poets incorporate the flower as a metaphor, simile, or symbol in form and join the larger conversation about ecopoetics. About the instructor: Gauri Awasthi (@gauriawasthi) was born and raised in Kanpur, India, received her MFA in creative writing from McNeese State University. She has won fellowships from Yaddo, Hambidge Center, Hedgebrook, Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference, and Sundress Academy for The Arts. Her writing has been published in Best New Poets 2023, Quarterly West, Notre Dame Review, The Rumpus, Buzzfeed, and others. She is an editor at The Offing and Elle Magazine. (fb)
