Frisco Native American Museum & Natural History Center
The Frisco Native American Museum & Natural History Center is a nonprofit educational institution dedicated to preserving and sharing the culture, art, and history of Native American tribes. Located in Frisco, North Carolina, it serves as a cultural treasure for the region.
History and Foundation
Established in 1987, the museum is housed in a historic building that once served as a general store and other community functions in the late 19th century. The foundation of the museum is attributed to Carl Bornfriend and his wife Joyce, both of whom came from educational backgrounds, with Carl having taught among the Delaware and Hopi tribes. This educational heritage is reflected in the museum's emphasis on learning and community engagement.
Exhibits and Displays
The museum boasts a vast and diverse collection of Native American artifacts, including ancient pottery, woven baskets, tools, intricate beadwork, turquoise jewelry, and tribal wear. The exhibits showcase the rich cultural heritage of tribes from across the United States, with a special focus on the indigenous peoples who once inhabited Hatteras Island. Visitors can explore displays featuring items such as weaponry, stone work, and jewelry, alongside examples of early life on Hatteras Island, including a longhouse replica, a dance circle with ceremonial poles, and a fishing weir.
Educational Programs and Activities
In addition to its exhibits, the museum offers a variety of educational programs and activities. These include workshops such as arts and crafts, finger weaving, and storytelling sessions, as well as interactive sessions and hands-on experiences. The museum sponsors Discovery Days throughout the year, which provide a deeper understanding and appreciation of Native American history.
Nature Trails
The museum also features nature trails that wind through several acres of maritime forest. These trails provide a serene, immersive experience, allowing visitors to connect with the natural environment important to Native Americans. Special programs are available for visually impaired guests, ensuring accessibility for all.
Impact and Recognition
The Frisco Native American Museum & Natural History Center is recognized for its commitment to preserving Native American culture and promoting cross-cultural understanding. It serves as a valuable resource for both local residents and visitors to the Outer Banks, offering a unique insight into the region's rich Native American history.

Honoring a Special Friend The success of the Frisco Native American Museum over the past 40 years has been due in large part to the wonderful volunteers and donors who have joined our team. On June 14, 2025, we lost one of those very special people - David Howell - when he transitioned from this life. David was a life-long explorer β researching and collecting, piece by piece, an amazing assortment of Native American artifacts.
