Kiwanis International
Kiwanis International is a global, volunteer-led nonprofit organization that focuses on community service and improving the lives of children worldwide. Founded on January 21, 1915, in Detroit, Michigan, it originally began as the Supreme Lodge Benevolent Order of Brothers. The name "Kiwanis" was adopted in 1916, derived from a Native American phrase often translated as "we trade" or "we build."
Mission and Vision
The mission of Kiwanis International is to improve the world one child and one community at a time. Its vision is to be a positive influence in communities worldwide, ensuring that all children grow up in supportive environments where they are believed in, nurtured, and provided with the necessary resources to thrive. The organization's motto, "Serving the Children of the World," reflects its core values and objectives.
Objectives
Kiwanis International is guided by six permanent objects:
- Primacy of Human and Spiritual Values: Giving precedence to human and spiritual values over material ones.
- The Golden Rule: Encouraging the application of the Golden Rule in all human interactions.
- Higher Standards: Promoting higher social, business, and professional standards.
- Serviceable Citizenship: Developing intelligent, aggressive, and serviceable citizenship through example and precept.
- Altruistic Service: Providing a means to form lasting friendships, render altruistic service, and build better communities.
- Public Opinion and Idealism: Contributing to sound public opinion and high idealism to foster righteousness, justice, patriotism, and goodwill.
Structure and Programs
Kiwanis operates through local clubs in more than 80 countries. It supports several Service Leadership Programs, including Key Club, Circle K, Builders Club, K-Kids, and Aktion Club. These programs are designed to develop leadership skills among youth and young adults while promoting community service. Kiwanis also partners with global organizations like UNICEF to address significant health issues, such as eliminating maternal and neonatal tetanus and iodine deficiency disorders.
Impact
Kiwanis members dedicate over 6 million hours of service annually and raise nearly $100 million for community projects. The organization has been involved in numerous community-based initiatives, including building accessible playgrounds, establishing food pantries, and hosting diversity fairs. Its global reach and community-focused initiatives have positioned Kiwanis as one of the leading service clubs worldwide.
