Home | Saint Nicholas Society The Saint Nicholas Society of the City of New York Preserving New Yorks Dutch heritage honoring distinguished individuals and enjoying good fellowship. Welcome to the Saint Nicholas Society Camaraderie with a Purpose The Society was founded in 1835 by a group of prominent New York City gentlemen including Washington Irving as a membership organization dedicated to preserving knowledge of the history and customs of New York Citys Dutch forebears. Medal of Merit Since 1937 awarded for outstanding ability and service to the City of New York. Literary Medal Since 1985 awarded to a writer who epitomizes the standards set by the founders of the Society Landmarks Over the last 400 years the Dutch the Society and our members have left a vast legacy.
