Drifters of Wigi: The Tiny Life Forms That Keep Our Bay Thriving Come learn about the plankton in Wigi (Humboldt) Bay on FRIDAY, May 30, 2025 6:30-7:30PM at The Natural History Museum of Cal Poly Humboldt with Lorena Dominguez, Student/ Marine Biology Department of Biological Sciences Cal Poly Humboldt, & Plankton Intern at the NEC Join us to learn about plankton, the tiny drifting organisms that play a big role in ocean health. During this talk, you will see projections of live samples of the ocean’s microscopic world. The presentation will highlight common and locally found species and the importance of observing and documenting our local plankton population through community science. Lorena Dominguez is a current marine biology student at Cal Poly Humboldt. She has been sampling plankton for the National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science’s Plankton Monitoring Network since 2019. Have you been looking to do a little stint in birding? Do you have eyes like a hawk? You’re a lucky duck—the 9th Annual Tim McKay Birdathon is upon us! Support the Northcoast Environmental Center & Redwood Region Audubon Society by looking for birds! What is a Bird-A-Thon? Go birding for a day, keep records of your species list and ask your friends and relatives to help you by contributing a nickel or more per species. Similar to a walk-a-thon, where you raise money from sponsors for each mile walked, a birdathon is a way of raising donations by the amount of bird species that are identified within a 24 hour period. Why support? Proceeds benefit the NEC & RRAS equally! Both organizations have been working on behalf of the environment and local community for over 50 years. They operate on a shoestring budget and are reliant on the dedication and support of donors and volunteers. Birdathon began with Tim McKay to raise proceeds for the NEC & RRAS. The fundraising event lapsed for a few years after Tim’s untimely death, but was revitalized by friend’s of Tim’s as a way of remembering him. Pledge donations towards specific teams, or make general donations online via our website. Each team collects pledges by asking friends, relatives and community members to contribute a nickel or more per species found during their birdathon day.
