Did you know? The history of Southeast Louisiana and Haiti are intertwined. The brutal conditions of slavery in Haiti, French Revolutionary ideals, and deep racial and class tensions were catalysts for the Haitian Revolution. Following the successful Haitian Slave Revolt, thousands of Haitians—both formerly enslaved individuals and free people of color—landed in New Orleans as refugees. France’s loss of Saint-Domingue weakened its economic grip on the region, contributing to the decision to sell Louisiana to the United States through the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. In response to the Haitian Revolution, Southern states enacted stricter slave codes to suppress signs of rebellion, imposing harsher punishments and tightening control over enslaved individuals. #HaitianHeritageMonth #LouisianaHistory #BlackHistory 🖼: View of the 40 days of fire of the plain houses at Cap-Français.
