Description

International Lineman's Rodeo Association

The International Lineman's Rodeo Association is a nonprofit organization, officially recognized as a business league, with a focus on promoting the safety and technical skills of linemen in the electric power industry.

History

The first Lineman's Rodeo was organized in 1984 by a group of industry professionals, including Tom White, Dale Warman, and Charlie Young. They aimed to create an event that would emphasize the importance of safety, recognize the technical skills of linemen, and provide a platform for linemen to share knowledge and have fun while competing[1].

Purpose and Activities

The International Lineman's Rodeo is a premier event that attracts skilled lineworkers from around the world. Competitors participate in challenges that mimic their everyday tasks, such as rescuing dummies from power lines and climbing poles while maintaining safety protocols[4]. The event also includes a safety conference, exhibits showcasing industry products, and networking opportunities for utility professionals[3].

Structure and Competitions

Participants compete in teams, with separate tracks for experienced linemen and apprentices. The competition includes four events, two of which are not disclosed until the event itself to challenge participants' adaptability and skill[4]. Safety is a critical component, with penalties for unsafe practices, emphasizing that speed is not more important than adhering to safety protocols[4].

Community and Impact

The event is not just about competition; it also fosters a sense of community among lineworkers and their families. The association contributes to charitable causes, such as raising funds for children's healthcare organizations during the event[4]. The atmosphere of the rodeo is often described as family-oriented, with activities for children, allowing families to understand the intricacies and dangers of the work linemen perform daily[4].

Legal Status

The International Lineman's Rodeo Association is tax-exempt and has been recognized as such since May 2000[2][5]. It is headquartered in the Overland Park, Kansas area and operates under EIN 48-1218735[2][5].
