Last week, staff members Rose and Savannah joined dozens of wilderness stewards from the Forest Service and other conservation partners at the Northern Rockies Wilderness Skills Institute, held at the Powell Ranger Station in the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forest. They camped out beside the beautiful Lochsa River, right on the edge of the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness, and spent the week deep in conversation about wilderness stewardship. In the field, they got hands-on with axe work and crosscut saw skills—learning from some of the best in the business. It was pretty cool. We had 6 people out for our last trail project on the Goat Mountain Trail! We spent a misty day up in the clouds, making our way along the steep, winding path to the snow line. Despite the threat of storms, we got a lot done: brushing, re-tread work, crosscut and silky saw tree removal (with most trees small enough to drag off-trail), and clearing overhanging branches and hazards. We also widened and re-sloped a rough tread section near a rootball and brushed back a thick patch right at the trailhead.
