Hanan Refugees Relief Group
Overview
The Hanan Refugees Relief Group is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit organization dedicated to providing essential resources and support to refugees and immigrants in the United States. The organization aims to transition these individuals into contributing members of their host communities by offering a range of services and solutions designed to foster integration and self-sufficiency.
History and Inspiration
The founder, Sheila Badwan, was inspired to establish the Hanan Refugees Relief Group after meeting a Syrian refugee family in 2016. As the daughter of Palestinian immigrants, Badwan felt a strong connection to the needs of refugees and immigrants, leading her to leave her career in healthcare to focus on this humanitarian work.
Mission and Services
The mission of the Hanan Refugees Relief Group is to provide critical support that helps refugees overcome the challenges of relocating to a new country. The organization offers:
- Housing: Short and long-term housing solutions to ensure stable living conditions.
- Labor Opportunities: Assistance in finding employment to promote financial stability.
- Educational Support: Programs such as English as a Second Language (ESL) to facilitate better integration into the community.
- Medical Relief: Access to healthcare services, including medical procedures and supplies.
- Food Program: Assistance with food access, addressing food insecurities and helping refugees navigate unfamiliar food environments.
- Social Services: Support in navigating local, state, and federal benefits.
Special Initiatives
During Ramadan, the organization conducts a toy drive to celebrate Eid, reflecting the meaning of "Hanan," which is "compassion" in Arabic. Additionally, the Dr. Ahmad Nasef Scholarship was established in memory of a founding member to support refugee and immigrant students in Wisconsin.
Operational Model
100% of donations are directly allocated to charitable activities, as volunteers cover all administrative and operational expenses. This model ensures transparency and maximizes the impact of contributions.
Expansion and Impact
The organization has expanded its reach and continues to build partnerships with other community groups to enhance its services and support for refugees and immigrants, aiming to improve their living conditions and promote successful integration into society.
