Overview
The New Mexico Environmental Law Center (NMELC) is a nonprofit, public interest law firm dedicated to protecting New Mexico's communities, air, land, and water in pursuit of environmental justice. Founded in 1987, the organization provides free and low-cost legal services to individuals, neighborhood associations, environmental organizations, tribes, and pueblos throughout New Mexico.
Mission
NMELC's mission is to ensure that all New Mexicans have access to clean air, land, and water. The organization focuses on legal and policy advocacy, public education, and administrative negotiations to address environmental issues. It particularly works with low-income communities and communities of color, which often lack the technical expertise and political influence to advocate for themselves in environmental decisions affecting their neighborhoods.
Focus Areas
Environmental Protection
NMELC addresses the impacts of pollution and irresponsible development on New Mexico's environment. This includes:
- Clean Air: Representing residents against polluting industries to preserve their right to clean air.
- Clean Land: Assisting communities in keeping dangerous pollutants away from their lands and cleaning up contaminated areas.
- Clean Water: Protecting access to and the quality of water, especially in the face of climate change.
Environmental Justice
The Law Center works to dismantle racist structures that contribute to environmental injustice, ensuring that all communities have equal access to clean environments. They advocate for stronger environmental regulations and support legislation that promotes climate equity.
Services
NMELC provides legal representation and advocacy through litigation, administrative proceedings, and legislative initiatives. It also engages in public education to raise awareness about environmental issues affecting New Mexico's communities.
History and Impact
Since its inception in 1987, NMELC has been a pivotal force in New Mexico's environmental justice movement. It is the only nonprofit law firm in the state specializing in environmental justice law. NMELC's work has contributed significantly to policy changes and legal victories that protect New Mexico's natural resources and public health.
Funding and Support
The Law Center's operations are supported by tax-deductible donations from individuals, businesses, foundations, and limited earned income. This financial backing is crucial for continuing their advocacy work on behalf of New Mexico's communities.

In a time when polluters are being protected over people, our donors stand with us to fight back by supporting the rule of law. With mounting environmental injustices—your support keeps justice within reach. Thank you to our incredible donors for fueling this fight.💚 (fb)

Eric Jantz, an attorney with the New Mexico Environmental Law Center, said the state’s authority provides some protection, but he warned that expedited federal processes could trigger litigation. “If the Forest Service either ignores its obligations under NEPA [National Environmental Policy Act] because of this executive order or its own regulations, litigation will probably ensue,” he said. Public health researchers, including longtime uranium critic Christopher Shuey, say any restart will take years, giving communities time to engage. “A lot of these folks have lived through the 80 years of the uranium legacy,” Shuey said. “They’ve learned across generations of the impacts of mining.” #uranium #uraniummining #navajo #navajonation #lajaramesa #rocahonda #nepa #environment #environmentaljustice #ej #nmelc #sric #newmexico #usfs #eo #executiveorders @cibolacitizen #cibolacitizen #cibolacounty (fb)
