Meet Steve, a recent graduate of the Transformation Program here at the Allentown Rescue Mission. Steve moved in with his mother after she was diagnosed with cancer. He took care of her every need until she passed away. Three days after her death, the constable came to Steve's home to inform Steve that his name was not on the lease. Steve would need to vacate the premises. Unsure of what to do, Steve made his way on foot to Allentown from Schnecksville, a chillingly long walk in 22-degree weather. When his feet hurt so badly he could no longer continue, Steve called his only connection in the area. He was promised a place to stay for a few days, however he was asked to leave after only a few hours. Back on the streets, Steve thought about his present and past circumstances and contemplated ending his own life. Thankfully, he found a room to rent, but after two days of cockroaches and despair, he left and couldn't return. Frozen solid, he found himself at the Allentown Rescue Mission and was immediately welcomed inside to a warm shower, new clothes, and a nourishing meal. After Steve's warm reception at the Emergency Shelter, he decided to join the Transformation Program to improve his life. He learned to be more kind and gentle, and how to take advice from others. Steve considered himself an atheist when he entered the program, and today he is open to a God who loves him. Now that Steve has graduated from the Transformation Program, he is working for the Clean Team Workforce while living at the Mission. He wants to take the lessons he has learned in the Transformation Program with him so he can continue to use his time wisely, and save as much money as he can so he leaves the Mission with a solid financial foundation.
