Saturday, April 5, was a perfect day for a Vernal Pool Foray at Selden Creek Preserve with Jim Arrigoni, Environmental Director of the Lyme Land Trust. Amid intermittent light rain showers, Jim led an exploration of two vernal pools at Selden Creek Preserve and explained their importance in the watershed. Vernal pools are bodies of water that usually dry up during the summer. Many creatures, most notably frogs and salamanders, depend upon these small pools to reproduce. It is a risky business. If the pool dries up too fast, the young will perish before they can reach adulthood. If the pool doesn’t dry up at all, it can become home for predators such as green frogs or fish, which will eat all the eggs. The pools are an important part of a biodiverse ecosystem, as a nursery and for other wildlife which forage on the eggs and larvae that are abundant in the pools during the Spring. (fb)
