Do you want universal healthcare? Then you need to get involved with Health Care for All Oregon. It might take some mental gymnastics to wrap your head around the fact that Oregon is likely to become the first state to transition to universal healthcare. Other states have made valiant attempts: Vermont, Massachusetts, Hawaii, California … The list goes on. But the fact is that none of those states have successfully made a transition to a system that is based on a single payer concept. In Oregon, we are different. We are the only state to have a constitutional amendment guaranteeing healthcare as a fundamental right to people who live in Oregon. And, we are the only state currently With a board working on a comprehensive plan for universal healthcare. The state of Oregon’s Universal Health Plan Governance Board must deliver a transition plan for universal health care, by September 2026. This plan must include a plan for administration and financing. Oregonians can expect to vote on this issue in 2027 or 2028. If Oregon goes first, and it seems likely that we will, other states are likely to follow. So, it is accurate to say that if you are interested in universal healthcare, wherever you live, you should watch the efforts in Oregon, and you should consider becoming a member of our organization. There are plenty of ways to get involved on Saturday, May 31, the National Day of Action for Single Payer. HCAO is participating in five events across the state in Portland, Tillamook, Bend, Corvallis, and Medford. We are partnering with too many affiliated organizations to list: Oregon working families party, Portland jobs with justice, nurses for single payer, physicians for a national health program, and more. In Portland join us at Dawson Park at noon. In Tillamook join us at the Tillamook library at 1:30. In Bend join us at peace corner at noon. In Medford, join us at the expo at 10 AM.
