Yesterday, the Governor released the May revision to his proposed state budget. While we were heartened to hear the Governor’s mention of supporting an affordable housing bond, we are disappointed and deeply concerned to see that the budget proposal did not include funding for essential affordable housing and homelessness programs. We are surprised to see that the Governor’s revised budget also does not commit to maintaining the existing structure of the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund (GGRF), which supplies a continuous appropriation to the Affordable Housing and Sustainable Communities Program (AHSC). These programs provide life-changing affordable homes and services to individuals and families and lay the crucial foundation for health, opportunity, and community vitality. Housing CA Executive Director Chione Flegal shared, "We are calling on Governor Newsom and the legislature to double down on our commitment to solving California’s housing affordability and homelessness crises by investing in the production of affordable homes and the crucial housing and homelessness programs that allow working people, immigrants, seniors, families, and other struggling people to secure and stay in their homes." We're kicking off Affordable Housing Month with momentum: three of Housing California’s co-sponsored bills passed out of committee this week and are headed to Assembly Appropriations, joining AB 1229 (Schultz) and AB 804 (Wicks) on the path forward. 🔹 AB 906 (M. González) Co-sponsored with California Rural Legal Assistance Foundation, Public Advocates, and California Environmental Justice Alliance, this bill would strengthen fair housing outcomes by reinforcing Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing (AFFH) requirements in the housing element process. Thank you, Assemblymember Mark Gonzalez, Assembly Housing Chair Matt Haney, Local Government Chair Assemblymember Juan Carrillo, for your leadership on this critical equity measure. 🔹 AB 1244 (Wicks) Co-sponsored with California Housing Partnership, AB 1244 creates a statewide framework to distribute Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT) mitigation funds to support affordable, infill housing near transit, making smart climate and housing investments go further. Thank you, Assemblymember Buffy Wicks and Housing Chair Asm. Matt Haney. 🔹 AB 1339 (M. González) Co-sponsored with Enterprise Community Partners, this bill would commission a study to better understand insurance barriers facing affordable housing providers, and how industry trends are affecting project viability statewide. Thank you again, Assemblymember Assemblymember Mark Gonzalez and Insurance Committee Chair Assemblymember Lisa Calderon, for advancing this essential work. 📌 Sign up for ongoing updates and opportunities to plug into our work: https://housingca.info/sign-up #AffordableHousingMonth #HousingCA #HomesHealthProsperity (fb)
