Description

Lake Agawam Conservancy Inc.

Lake Agawam Conservancy Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the conservation and improvement of Lake Agawam, located in Southampton, New York. The organization focuses on water quality protection, management of nuisance vegetation, and overall ecosystem preservation.

Mission and Activities

The Conservancy aims to ensure a healthy and sustainable environment for Lake Agawam and its surrounding ecosystem. Its activities include initiatives to improve water quality, primarily addressing issues like frequent blue-green algal blooms caused by excessive nitrogen loading. Collaborations with environmental experts and organizations are crucial in implementing these projects.

Collaborations and Projects

One notable collaboration is with Roux, a company that has assisted the Conservancy in managing water lily removal and installing aerators around Lake Agawam. This aeration system enhances water circulation and increases dissolved oxygen levels, which helps promote biodegradation of lake sediments, reduce algae growth, and mitigate odors while improving fish habitats.

Financial Overview

As of its latest financial filings, the Conservancy reported a revenue of $170,000 in 2023, with expenses of $356,000. The organization has total assets worth $448,000 and liabilities of $12,000 for that year. Contributions make up the majority of its revenue, with donations being tax-deductible.

Governance and Leadership

The organization is led by a board of directors including prominent figures such as John A. Paulson, who serves as Chairman and Director, Robert J. Giuffra Jr., serving as President and Secretary, and D. Scott Lindsay, as Treasurer. Other directors include David C. Bohnett, Meghan Nadosy Magyar, Fernanda Niven, Charles B. Scarborough III, and Kenneth A. Fox. Notable advisors include Dr. Christopher Gobler, who provides scientific guidance on water quality issues.

Environmental Impact

The Conservancy's efforts are vital in maintaining ecological balance around Lake Agawam, addressing both environmental and health concerns related to water pollution. Its work aligns with broader environmental conservation goals, ensuring the sustainability of natural resources in the region.
