Have you ever come across a person who refers to a bird using a 4 letter code? It’s basically shorthand that is specific to each species of bird and allows us to be more efficient when referring to that species. For instance, YCNH stands for Yellow-crowned Night Heron. You see how much more efficient that is? On April 30 a good Samaritan called us, concerned about a bird in Portsmouth that might be injured. NNWR volunteer Dawn went to the site and found a young YCNH that was unable to stand. The bird was immediately brought to NNWR where an examination was done. We were glad that there were no external injuries but it was found to be very skinny and weak. At the advice of our veterinarian, medicine to deworm the YCNH was administered to see if that was the cause of its condition but that came out negative. At this point it was likely that it was a case of failure to thrive, which is not an unusual problem with young birds that are on their own and not doing very well finding food. It became evident very quickly that the problem of the weakness was, indeed, the YNCH was hungry! Fed up to 100 silverside fish every day, it only took a few weeks before strength was recovered and the bird was ready to return to the wild. In the video you can see how well the YCNH flew away, which put a big smile on our faces!! If you would like to support the work we do in rehabbing birds that are in distress, like this bird was, please use the Donate button below the photos. Thank you!! (fb)

It's imperative to remain vigilant in knowing how to handle these situations. Please share and help us help our wild birds stay safe and get any help they may need. #raisingawarenesstogether #naturesnanny #raptorlovers #supportourraptors #wildliferehabilitation #hawklovers #falconlovers #owllovers #raptors #wildbirds #wildliferescue Graphic credit to Clear Communications Group, Inc. 2015 (fb)
