As we round out #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth, we are thinking of all NYers with mental health complexities who were killed by the NYPD - the vast majority of whom were people of color. Today we are remembering #WinRozario, who was shot and killed by NYPD officers Matthew Cianfrocco and Salvatore Alongi in his own home, in front of his mom and brother, in 2024. Everything was calm until the police arrived and fatally escalated the situation, tasing and shooting Win at least five times within two minutes. We echo Win Rozario’s family’s demands to fire and prosecute officers Cianfrocco + Alongi, and to remove police from mental health responses. Instead, we need REAL investments in mental health services, supportive housing, de-escalatory emergency response teams, and resources for our communities - NOT more cops.
