LVIS
LVIS -- Keeping East Hampton beautiful since 1895. The LVIS is made up of almost 400 volunteers who address four major concerns; Preservation, Conservation, Education, and Beautification. In 1895, 21 East Hampton housewives formed the LVIS. They immediately began raising funds to finance watering down the dusty streets and installing oil lamps, as well as hiring a lamplighter. Soon the ladies expanded their efforts to include the continuing projects of maintaining the Village street trees and the Village greens. In 1925, the LVIS began a successful movement for Village zoning and the elimination of billboards. In the early 1950s, the battle against Dutch elm disease began. LVIS projects also include awarding student scholarships and recognizing student achievement in various areas in grades 4 through 12.The organization was instrumental in the establishment of the Village Planning Board, the listing of large areas of the Village on the National Register of Historic Places, and placing those areas under the protection of local Historic Districts. The LVIS strives to keep its membership informed about issues that may impact on the community.
