"My pregnancy was smooth sailing until I got to week 24. I started to have painful upper right quadrant pain and intense headaches. I put off going to the hospital until 24w + 5d as I didn’t realize I was as sick as I was. When I got to triage, they quickly found I had progressed to HELLP syndrome and we would need to deliver our baby that day. Within 4 hours of arriving to the hospital, I was whisked away for an emergency c-section and my baby was taken straight to the NICU. She was intubated and stayed on the vent for 28 days, she had a large PDA that we were able to close with medicine instead of surgery and we did have 1 scare that we thought could be an infection (Thank God it was nothing!). She had an atypical NICU course for a 24 weeker as her respiratory course was quite seamless and eating was too. We left the hospital at week 36 on the dot and she spent 84 days in our NICU, she came home eating by mouth and with no breathing support. She is now 3.5 and has hit all her developmental milestones. She goes to school everyday and while one of the tiniest in her class, she is doing well. All this to say the NICU journey was the hardest time of my husband and I’s life we have been blessed with an amazing little girl who has defied many odds. There is hope!"
