The Disability Network

The Disability Network (TDN) is a United States nonprofit organization and a center for independent living dedicated to supporting and empowering people with disabilities to live independently within their communities. Established in 1992, TDN focuses on person-centered services, advocacy, and collaboration primarily in Genesee County, Michigan.

Mission and Vision

The mission of The Disability Network is to support and empower individuals with disabilities to live as independently as possible by providing resources, education, and advocacy. The organization envisions a world where everyone is valued equally and communities are inclusive and accessible to all.

History

Since its founding in 1992, TDN has worked with thousands of individuals with disabilities, helping them develop independent living skills and advocating for their rights within various social and community settings. The organization has expanded its services over the years while maintaining a focus on direct support and systemic change to improve accessibility and inclusion.

Services

The Disability Network offers a range of core services designed to meet the diverse needs of people with disabilities:

  • Information & Referral: Providing information on disability-related issues and resources to individuals, families, professionals, and the general public.

  • Peer Support: Facilitating support groups and individual peer counseling to create personal networks that encourage shared learning and personal choice.

  • Nursing Facility Transitions: Assisting individuals in transitioning from nursing facility settings to community-based living environments to foster greater independence.

  • Advocacy: Helping people understand and exercise their rights related to Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, employment, education, and community participation.

  • Youth Transitions: Offering programs geared toward youth that promote peer relationships, independent living skills, career exploration, and connection to community resources.

  • Independent Living Skills: Providing classes and support in daily living skills such as cooking, outdoor recreation, and the arts to enhance self-sufficiency.

Impact and Community Role

The Disability Network has been an active advocate addressing systemic challenges faced by people with disabilities, including barriers to voting, access to healthcare, and community inclusion. The organization also responds to funding challenges affecting service provision and works to educate the public and policymakers about the realities and needs of the disability community.

By partnering with local agencies and community stakeholders, TDN strives to create a more accessible and equitable environment for all individuals with disabilities, ensuring they are valued members of society.
