Asian American Unity Coalition

Overview

The Asian American Unity Coalition (AAUC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization established in 2018. Its creation was facilitated by a pivotal conference in Alaska, bringing together representatives from 12 distinct Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) organizations and 20 leaders representing the major ethnic groups of Chinese, Indian, Filipino, Korean, and Japanese Americans[1][2].

History

The AAUC was formally structured in 2019 by establishing a Constitution and Bylaws to govern its operations. By the end of that year, the organization had obtained its nonprofit status, solidifying its foundation[1][2]. In February 2020, the Board of Governors was elected, marking a significant milestone in its organizational development[2].

Mission and Activities

The AAUC is committed to uniting the diverse AAPI communities, promoting collaboration, advocacy, and education to amplify their collective voice. It envisions a society where AAPI individuals achieve economic and social success and have equal political representation, regardless of race, ethnicity, or nationality[4].

One of AAUC's notable activities is hosting the National Civic Leadership Forum, which began as a physical event but transitioned to virtual formats during the pandemic. The forum resumed as an in-person event in 2022. AAUC also hosts the Unity Summit, most recently held in Washington, D.C. in 2023, which focuses on fostering unity and discussing key issues affecting the AAPI community[1][3].

Additionally, AAUC has launched a monthly newsletter and audio podcasts aimed at building a collective American dream for the AAPI communities. The organization has also developed an online community hub project known as the AAPI Hub, featuring a comprehensive database of nearly 15,000 AAPI nonprofit organizations across the United States[1].

Partnerships and Impact

In recent years, AAUC has partnered with other organizations to extend its reach and impact. For instance, it has announced a partnership with TEAM Aid, enhancing its ability to serve AAPI communities nationwide[4]. The coalition continues to engage in civic activities such as voter registration and advocacy for policies benefiting AAPI communities[3].

AAUC's work includes promoting awareness and action on various legislative bills that impact AAPI communities, such as those addressing visa backlogs, civil liberties protection, and property discrimination[3].

Leadership

The organization is led by a committed team of volunteer board members, with S.K. Lo serving as president. AAUC's governance structure includes a 19-member board, with officers and standing committee chairs working to strengthen unity and civic engagement within the AAPI community[1][3].
