Long Beach Blues Society
The Long Beach Blues Society is a nonprofit organization based in Long Beach, California, with a mission to serve youth, seniors, veterans, and underserved communities through inspirational learning opportunities, concerts, and interactive engagements across Southern California. It preserves the past and promotes the future of the Blues, acknowledging the rich historical roots of Blues music in Black culture and post-chattel slavery America[1][3].
History
The organization was incorporated in 2015 and received tax-exempt status as a 501(c)(3) public benefit nonprofit corporation in 2016. Its inception was tied to the production of the New Blues Festival, which began in 2014 in response to the demand for a local live blues event. The festival has grown significantly, attracting over 7,000 blues fans in 2017[1]. The Long Beach Blues Society's initial board members included staff from the New Blues Festival and later additions from the local musician and blues advocate communities[1].
Mission and Diversity
The Long Beach Blues Society strives to practice Anti-Racism and create spaces for People of Color to connect, learn, work, and grow through arts and music. It emphasizes Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in its programs and operations, recognizing the Blues' deep roots in Black culture[1].
Programs
- Blues in the Schools: This program aims to keep music alive for future generations by introducing them to the authentic blues sound.
- Blues for Vets: Supports veterans through music, providing them with access to Blues music and events.
- New Blues Festival: Annually brings world-renowned blues artists to Long Beach, such as Keb' Mo', Robert Cray, and Tommy Castro[3][4].
Operating Context
The Long Beach Blues Society operates with a medium-sized budget within the arts and culture, and social justice sectors. It serves areas including Long Beach and Lakewood in California[2].
