We were honored to screen more than 300 student-athletes at Heart of a Champion Day this year in Winston-Salem. The event, supported by volunteers including doctors, nurses, athletic trainers and other health care professionals, provided FREE comprehensive health evaluations, including musculoskeletal exams, vision checks and heart screenings with an ECG conducted by Atrium Health Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute and Levine Children’s cardiologists — all in one visit. “Prevention is key to keeping young athletes healthy,” said Dr. Heath Thornton, medical director of our athletic trainer outreach program. The screenings aimed to detect issues like serious heart conditions or orthopedic concerns early, helping families take proactive steps. We’re thrilled to announce that renovations for our new Eye Institute in Innovation Quarter are underway! 🎉 Opening in 2026, the Eye Institute will serve both adults and children, offering convenient access, ample parking, and around 165,000 square feet of cutting-edge space—including welcoming waiting areas, exam rooms, and surgical facilities. It’s all about delivering world-class eye care tailored to our community’s needs. “Since we opened our current ophthalmology space in 1992, we now see patients from the Triad and a five-state region and have grown to more than 100,000 ophthalmology visits each year across Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist,” said Dr. Craig Greven, chair of ophthalmology at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. “Our team handles everything from routine eye needs to some of the most complicated eye conditions and diseases.
