Overview

Unity Farm Sanctuary Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing a safe and loving lifelong home for farmed animals, with a strong focus on education and promoting a culture of kindness and connection. Founded in late 2016, the sanctuary recognizes the unmet need for such services in Massachusetts, where few organizations serve as sanctuaries and most are at capacity.

Mission

The mission of Unity Farm Sanctuary is to offer a forever home to ill, disabled, senior, orphaned, or surrendered farmed animals. The sanctuary also hosts educational programs for the public, fostering community engagement and empathy towards animals. This includes virtual programs that extend beyond their New England base, aiming to positively impact the lives of animals and people globally.

Operations

Unity Farm Sanctuary operates on 30 acres of owned land, with surrounding protected areas creating a 70-acre plateau. The sanctuary features four miles of walking trails, five streams, two ponds, and three treehouses. The organization emphasizes the importance of its service not only to animals but also to volunteers, recognizing the therapeutic benefits that animal interactions can provide for individuals with various challenges.

Volunteer Program

The sanctuary has developed a structured volunteer program with over 350 volunteers, who earn credentials based on their knowledge and experience. This program is designed to support volunteers with diverse needs, allowing them to connect with animals and nature, which can be particularly beneficial for those who struggle to interact with people.

Recognition and Governance

Unity Farm Sanctuary acknowledges the ancestral lands of the Massachusett and Nipmuc tribes and strives for racial equity in its governance practices. The board includes diverse leadership from various professional backgrounds, ensuring transparency and inclusivity in decision-making processes.

Starting with a small group of animals, Unity Farm Sanctuary has grown significantly, becoming one of the largest animal sanctuaries in New England.
