The 1886 Jailhouse is a witness to more than a century of stories. Have you heard them all? ➡ The building was designed by legendary Milwaukee architect E.V. Koch, with construction lasting over a year. ➡ The 1886 Jailhouse is only one of two in the Great Lakes region with a fully intact cell block. Built from riveted iron lattices, all eight cells still function and lock. ➡ Over time, 26 different families lived in the house during the building’s 75-year use as Washington County’s jail. 👉 The Jailhouse's first floor transformed into a county-wide museum in 1962, operated by The Tower Heritage Center (formerly known as the Washington County Historical Society). 👉 The Tower Heritage Center was granted use of the neighboring 1889 Courthouse, sparking capital restoration projects. 👉 In 2022 The Tower Heritage Center became the primary owner and caretaker of this remarkable building. TODAY, this historic site stands as a monument of early Washington County's resilience, ingenuity, and entrepreneurial roots.
