People Responding in Social Ministry (PRISM)

PRISM, or People Responding in Social Ministry, is a non-profit organization that provides essential services to communities in the northwest Twin Cities metro area. Established in 1970, PRISM was founded by community members who recognized the need for food assistance in New Hope, Minnesota.

Mission and Objectives

PRISM's mission is to empower individuals in building healthy, stable lives by providing connections to community resources. They focus on delivering dignity-centered services, emphasizing compassion and respect for all participants. The organization serves a broader area, including Plymouth, Crystal, New Hope, Robbinsdale, and Golden Valley.

Programs and Services

PRISM offers a variety of programs aimed at addressing basic needs such as food, housing, and clothing.

  • Marketplace Food Shelf: This program allows participants to shop independently for fresh and packaged groceries as well as personal hygiene items, catering to their dietary needs and preferences. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the food shelf has seen a significant increase in demand, serving nearly triple the number of families compared to previous years.

  • Shop for Change Thrift Store: Provides affordable clothing and household items, generating substantial funds for PRISM's basic needs programs. On average, the thrift store grosses about $17,000 per month.

  • Homelessness Prevention: This service helps households avoid eviction by offering financial assistance, advocacy, and referrals to community resources. Annually, it supports around 250 households.

  • Children’s Programs: PRISM ensures that all children have the opportunity to celebrate special events and milestones, such as birthdays and the start of the school year.

Impact and Community Engagement

PRISM's work is contingent upon the support of volunteers and donors. The organization serves over 5,500 households annually, addressing rising food insecurity and housing challenges in the community. Through their programs, PRISM aims to foster a holistic approach to social services, ensuring that everyone is treated with dignity and respect.

History and Development

Since its inception, PRISM has evolved to meet the changing needs of its community. Initially focused on food assistance, the organization now offers a broader range of services, including housing support and community resource connections. This expansion reflects PRISM's commitment to adapting to the growing disparities and challenges faced by local families, particularly exacerbated by events like the COVID-19 pandemic. Today, PRISM remains a vital provider of basic needs services in the northwest Twin Cities area.
