Growing High Point

Growing High Point is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization established in 2016 with the mission of transforming under-resourced neighborhoods in High Point, North Carolina. The organization focuses on community engagement, empowerment, and entrepreneurship to improve the quality of life for residents.

Mission and Vision

The vision of Growing High Point is to foster vibrant and dynamic neighborhoods that offer access and opportunities to every resident. Its mission is centered around transforming under-resourced areas through various initiatives.

Initiatives

Growing High Point is involved in several key initiatives, including:

  • Urban Agriculture: The organization promotes urban agriculture to alleviate food insecurity. This is achieved through urban farming microenterprises and community programs that enhance food security and access to fresh produce.

  • Growdega: A mobile grocery store that addresses nutritional issues in food deserts by providing fresh fruits and vegetables. Growdega also supports the use of SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) and EBT (Electronic Benefits Transfer) by offering a program to double the value of these resources, thus increasing purchasing power for healthier options.

  • Community Programs: Initiatives like the POP Club, in partnership with the High Point Public Library, focus on educating children about healthy food choices. Participants receive tokens to purchase locally grown produce and engage in educational activities.

  • Transformation of Neighborhoods: Beyond food initiatives, Growing High Point works on renovating homes to increase homeownership and engages residents through community events.

Leadership and Team

The organization is supported by a diverse team, including urban farm leaders, community outreach specialists, and youth mentors. Key figures include Dr. Patrick Harman, who is the founder and former board chair of Growing High Point, and individuals like Caroline DiGrande, who coordinates farm-to-table initiatives, and Andre, who leads urban farm operations and educates youth in the community.

Impact

Since its inception, Growing High Point has contributed significantly to improving the local food system and enhancing community engagement. The organization's focus on sustainable agriculture and community empowerment has helped make fresh produce more accessible to residents in under-resourced areas.
