Woman's Club of Palo Alto
The Woman's Club of Palo Alto is a civic, cultural, philanthropic, and social organization founded on June 20, 1894, by 24 women in Palo Alto, California. It is a member of the General Federation of Women's Clubs and the California Federation of Women's Clubs, boasting the largest membership of any women's club in California.
Club History
Initially founded in the late 19th century during the women's suffrage and temperance movements, the club has played a significant role in shaping the local community. Its first president was Mary Grafton Campbell, and notable early members included Anna Zschokke, who contributed to establishing public schools in Palo Alto, and Lydia Mitchell, co-founder of the Palo Alto Red Cross. The club actively supported the California women's suffrage movement, which secured women's right to vote in the state in 1911.
By the early 20th century, the club had become a pivotal force in local government and school affairs, even when women were ineligible to vote. Members were involved in various initiatives such as founding the city's first elementary and high schools, establishing the first public lending library in 1898, and advocating for better teacher pay. They also beautified the city by planting and maintaining trees and recommending park locations.
Architectural History
The club's current building, located at a historic site, was constructed in 1916 in the Tudor-Craftsman style. Designed by Charles Edward Hodges, the building features a porte-cochere doorway, heavy beams, stucco finish, and a steeply pitched roof. It includes a ballroom with maple flooring and a separate Fireside Room. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2014.
Philanthropic Activities
The Woman's Club of Palo Alto remains dedicated to philanthropy, annually awarding grants to local nonprofit organizations. The club supports a wide range of community initiatives, including education, environmental conservation, and social welfare.
Modern Activities
Today, the club continues to host various events and activities that align with its mission of community engagement. It serves as a platform for discussing topics such as women in technology and supports educational and social initiatives in the local community. The club maintains a scholarship fund and remains a vibrant part of Palo Alto's social landscape.
