Today, we recognize the anniversary of the founding of the Organization of African Unity's, which later became the African Union. This day, known globally as “Africa Day,” celebrates the generations who have fought for liberation, unity, and self-determination across the continent and its diaspora. In 2013, our Executive Director, Amaha Kassa- a first-generation, Ethiopian immigrant community organizer and attorney- founded ACT to fill a critical gap in the organizing and political space in the U.S. Amaha saw firsthand how African immigrants were often excluded from mainstream immigrant rights work, and how our communities faced unique challenges of language barriers, legal roadblocks, and economic injustice, with little support. Our mission at ACT is to continue to place Pan-Africanism at the forefront of our advocacy, and Africa Day reminds us of why that is critical to moving us forward. (fb)
