Description

Lettered Street Neighborhood Association

The Lettered Street Neighborhood Association is a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering community engagement and development within the Lettered Streets neighborhood of Bellingham, Washington. As a 501(c)(4) civic league, it aims to promote social welfare and civic activities for its members, which include residents and stakeholders of the neighborhood[4].

History and Context

The Lettered Streets neighborhood has a rich history, dating back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Established as a middle-class community adjacent to downtown Bellingham, it was named for its grid-planned streets labeled A through J. The area features several historic sites, including the Pickett House and the First Congregational United Church of Christ[1][3].

In the 1960s, the neighborhood experienced decline but was revitalized through community efforts and the Community Development Block Grant Program. These initiatives improved infrastructure by adding new streets, sidewalks, sewer lines, and street trees, and by retrofitting homes[3].

Community Activities and Objectives

The association is driven by a volunteer board that organizes community events, meetings, and initiatives to enhance neighborhood life. These activities include planning for neighborhood events, supporting local park stewardship (such as at Gossage Garden), and collaborating on food sharing programs, childcare initiatives, and community education projects[2]. The association also seeks volunteers for various roles, promoting community engagement and civic participation[2].

Monthly board meetings provide a platform for residents to contribute to decision-making processes and discuss neighborhood issues. Membership is open to all residents of the Lettered Streets area, regardless of tenure or property ownership[2].

Mission

The Lettered Street Neighborhood Association focuses on building a sense of community and place among its residents. It encourages participation in neighborhood affairs and works to preserve the historical and cultural character of the area while promoting sustainable development and quality of life for its residents[2][3].

Through its activities and governance structure, the association reflects the community's values of inclusivity, cooperation, and civic responsibility.
