The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation has awarded $130,000 in grants for historic preservation projects across Georgia, and Historic Macon received one of them. We will use our $10,000 matching grant for painting at the house located at 784 College St. It sits right at the rear entrance to Mount de Sales Academy Macon GA. In all, the Georgia Trust awarded funding for 15 historic sites through its Callahan Incentive Grant and The 1772 Foundation Grant programs. Maintenance grants were provided for exterior work: painting; surface restoration; fire detection/security systems; repairs to/restoration of chimneys, porches, roofs, and windows; repairs to foundations and sills; and masonry repointing. The grant will help restore the beauty of the old College Street house, and we appreciate the funding. To learn more and see the other sites, look here: https://bit.ly/3He7YEd (fb)

Our upcoming Sidney's Salon will delve into the fascinating and multifaceted history of Sapelo Island, a place marked by layers of human experience and ecological significance. Join us at our office, the Old Fire Hall No. 4, on June 5th for an engaging presentation with T.M. Brown, author of "The Last Laird of Sapelo." This historical novel brings to life the turbulent story of Randolph Spalding, an heir to Sapelo's lands who found himself caught in the maelstrom of the Civil War. Based on the life of the youngest son of Thomas Spalding, a prominent figure in Georgia’s antebellum era, "The Last Laird of Sapelo" delves into the complexities of a man wrestling with duty, honor, and the changing tides of history. As the South hurtles towards secession, Randolph finds himself thrust into a position of leadership, facing personal and political crises that threaten to dismantle his family’s legacy. This rich narrative explores the moral dilemmas faced during wartime, particularly the difficult choices between justice and protecting those who have acted out of desperation. "The Last Laird of Sapelo" paints a vivid picture of the fragility of humanity amidst societal upheaval. Themes of family legacy, the impact of war, and the intricate history of Sapelo Island make up this fascinating tale. Brown will share insights into his research process and the inspiration behind this compelling story. As always, our Salons are free and open to the public. We will begin with a reception and light refreshments at 5:30, followed by a presentation at 6. You can learn more and register HERE: https://bit.ly/HMFSALONS. (fb)

THANK YOU SHOPPERS FOR FLEA MARKET SUCCESS Our spring Flea Market which closed Sunday was a resounding success thanks to our shoppers and months of work by our volunteers. On Saturday alone we had more than 1200 shoppers. And on Sunday hundreds of shoppers showed up to snag halfprice deals. Well start picking up donations from our kind contributors soon and then well resume our preparations for the fall Flea Market.
