Book-It Repertory Theatre
Overview
Book-It Repertory Theatre is a nonprofit organization dedicated to transforming great literature into theatrical performances. Founded in 1987, it is recognized for its unique adaptations of literary works into stage plays, preserving the author's narrative voice and inspiring audiences to read.
History
The theatre company began as an artistic collective experimenting with adapting short stories for performance. Initially, it toured schools and libraries, becoming officially registered as a nonprofit in 1990. Book-It established its main stage home in Seattle in 1995 and later moved to the Seattle Center, where it operated until its closure in 2023.
Mission and Style
Book-It's mission is to inspire literacy through the theatre arts by producing adaptations of literature that maintain the original narrative voice. This approach, known as the Book-It Style, involves using the text from literature as spoken dialogue by characters, encouraging active participation from the audience.
Over its history, Book-It has produced over 100 world-premiere adaptations, earning numerous awards, including the 2012 Governor's Arts Award and the 2010 Mayor's Arts Award. It was also a member of the John F. Kennedy Center's Partners in Education program.
Revival
After closing its doors in 2023, Book-It is set for a revival, with its founders Jane Jones and Myra Platt returning to leadership roles. The plan involves reimagining the company's structure, focusing on smaller-scale productions and partnerships with other theatres.
Financial Operations
Book-It operates as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, with significant revenue from contributions and program services. Financial transparency is maintained through annual filings.
Legacy and Impact
Book-It has been praised for its contributions to Seattle's cultural scene, fostering a love for literature and theatre in its community. Despite past financial challenges, the company remains committed to its mission, aiming to continue inspiring new generations of readers and theatregoers.

HELLO, AGAIN! BOOK-IT IS BACK! We are grateful to be here. Book-It is embarking on a redux chapter and is living the proverbial âphoenix rises from the ashesâ dream! After having grieved the sundowning of Book-It Repertory Theatre in the Summer of 2023, first and foremost we want to make a heartfelt proclamation of gratitude to our outgoing board of trustees and staff who navigated those rough seas with serious grit and dogged determination. The board made sure to keep Book-Itâs not-for-profit status viable, and fulfilled all artistsâ obligations and contracts and eradicated the companyâs debt. They made it possible for us to resurrect the company, and we owe those stalwarts, and this community which stepped up to help the company in need, a huge debt of gratitude. So here we are again, with the same mission: to transform great literature into great theatre through simple and sensitive production, and to inspire our audiences to read. But this time, we are operating with a new paradigm: Book-It will dedicate itself to producing one show at a time, bringing its signature style and high production standards to a single mainstage production in Seattle each year. The company will both reach into its back catalogue of locally-adapted scripts and commission new adaptations of classic and contemporary works. The money we take in through ticket sales and funding sources will go directly to supporting the art. We intend to run lean â without overhead or administrative expenses, and channel our income directly to what you see on stage. First up: David Wroblewskiâs gripping novel The Story of Edgar Sawtelle at the Broadway Performance Hall on Capitol Hill this October. Our determination is to recall to life a company that grew up in and has been beloved by Seattle and our glorious Puget Sound Region. Thank you for being here! Your interest in Book-It is invaluable to us. In the months ahead, as we forge a new future for Book-It, weâll keep you abreast of developments. Please visit us at book-it.org â join our mailing list, volunteer your time and become a vital asset to the organization, or, if youâre able, pledge a gift of any amount comfortable for you to ensure that Book-It is able to meet its high production standards. Thank you for your support. Itâs great to be back. With Joy and Gusto â Jane and Myra, Artistic Directors (fb)
