American Society of Plumbing Engineers

The American Society of Plumbing Engineers (ASPE) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the science of plumbing engineering and enhancing the plumbing engineering profession. Founded in 1964 by a group of plumbing engineers in Southern California, ASPE is the only organization focused exclusively on the needs of the plumbing engineering community[1][3].

Mission and Activities

ASPE's mission is to promote the professional growth and advancement of its members and to ensure the health, welfare, and safety of the public through safe water and sanitation practices[3]. The organization disseminates technical data and information, sponsors activities that facilitate interaction among professionals, and promotes research and education in plumbing engineering[3][4].

Membership and Chapters

ASPE has grown into an international association with over 7,400 members across the globe, including regions such as the United States, Canada, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East[3]. Members can participate in one of the numerous local chapters, which serve as primary communication links for services and programs[4].

Education and Certification

ASPE offers a Certified in Plumbing Design (CPD) program, providing a comprehensive qualification for engineers and designers of plumbing systems. This certification is nationally recognized and is not linked to state-regulated Professional Engineer (PE) registration[3][4].

Industry Partnerships

ASPE collaborates with several industry organizations on codes, standards, and public health initiatives. Notable partnerships include the International Association of Plumbing & Mechanical Officials, the International Code Council, and the World Plumbing Council[1][3].

Events and Publications

The society hosts biennial Conventions and annual Tech Symposia to facilitate professional growth and networking. These events are accompanied by the Engineered Plumbing Exposition, showcasing innovative plumbing products and services[3][4]. ASPE publishes technical resources such as the Plumbing Engineering Design Handbook and maintains regular communication with its members through publications like Plumbing Systems and Design and the ASPE Pipeline newsletter[4].

History and Development

Since its establishment, ASPE has grown significantly, marking milestones such as its 50th anniversary in 2014, during which it was recognized as a leading provider of education and training for plumbing professionals[1]. The organization continues to expand its influence internationally and advance plumbing engineering technology[3].
