Can Do Multiple Sclerosis, formerly known as The Jimmie Heuga Center for Multiple Sclerosis, is a national nonprofit organization based in the United States. The organization was founded in 1984 by Jimmie Heuga, an Olympic bronze medalist who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) at the age of 26.

History

Jimmie Heuga was advised against physical activity following his diagnosis, in accordance with conventional medical wisdom at the time. However, he discovered that exercise improved both his physical function and outlook on life with MS. Heuga developed a program combining exercise, nutrition, and mental motivation to enhance his well-being. This approach formed the basis of Can Do MS's mission to promote a proactive lifestyle for MS patients.

Mission and Programs

Can Do MS is dedicated to empowering individuals with MS and their support partners by providing them with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to manage their condition effectively. The organization offers a range of free programs and resources focused on various aspects of life with MS, including nutrition, exercise, cognition, fatigue, relationships, family planning, and employment. One notable program is MS Moves, a fitness class designed to help participants maintain functional abilities for daily life while promoting overall health.
