Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks

The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (BPOE), commonly referred to as The Elks, is a U.S.-based fraternal organization and charitable group. Founded in 1868 in New York City by Charles Algernon Sidney Vivian, the BPOE evolved from a social club for minstrel show performers into a nationwide brotherhood focused on community service, patriotism, and mutual aid.

History

Originally known as the "Jolly Corks," the group changed its name to the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks by December 1868. The organization was inspired by the need to provide communal support following the death of a fellow actor due to insufficient funds for medical care. As of 1890, 173 lodges had been established across the United States. The BPOE's growth was marked by the establishment of other national and international chapters, including the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of Canada in 1912.

Membership and Activities

To join the BPOE, applicants must be U.S. citizens over 21 years old, believe in God, and be of good character. The organization is known for its philanthropic efforts, including scholarships, youth programs (such as the "Hoop Shoot" competition), and support for veterans and disaster relief.

Pillars and Traditions

The BPOE upholds four core pillars: Charity, Justice, Brotherly Love, and Fidelity. Members participate in traditional rituals, including the nightly "Hour of Recollection" toast to absent members. Historically, the BPOE was exclusive, but it now welcomes all eligible U.S. citizens.

Membership Numbers and Structure

As of recent years, the BPOE has more than 750,000 members across over 1,900 local lodges. The organization is led by a Grand Exalted Ruler, who serves as the national president.

Notable Initiatives

The Elks have been involved in numerous national initiatives, such as conducting bond drives during World War II, promoting civil defense programs, and advocating for American principles through the "Declaration of American Principles" adopted in 1961. The Elks National Home in Bedford, Virginia, was established in 1916 as a retirement facility but was sold in 2013.
