The Salem Community Theatre Inc.
Overview
The Salem Community Theatre Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing the community of Salem with live stage performances and promoting the theatrical arts. Founded in 1977 by Charles E. Williams and Judy Waugh, it has grown significantly over the years, offering a variety of performances and engaging community programs.
History
Initially, the theatre conducted its performances at the Memorial Building and later at Salem High School. Its first production was Godspell, directed by a professional director, Cathy Verhoff, who was hired to ensure the quality of the performances. In 1981, the group acquired the old State Theatre building, which had operated as a movie house since 1922. With support from the Salem Community Foundation and public donations, the venue was converted into a live theatre, marking its grand opening with the performance of The Red Dragon, an original work by Cathy Verhoff[1].
Mission and Activities
The Salem Community Theatre's mission is to provide the community with a full season of live performances, while also promoting theatrical arts through instruction and outreach programs. It serves as a significant cultural and economic hub for the downtown area, attracting visitors and supporting local businesses.
Community Impact
The theatre's role in the community is multifaceted, contributing to both cultural enrichment and economic development. It fosters a deeper appreciation for the arts and offers opportunities for community members to participate in and enjoy theatrical events[4].
Governance
The theatre is managed by a Board of Trustees, which includes individuals such as Dan Haueter (President), Carrie Utt (Vice President), and others who oversee the theatre's operations and strategic development[1].
Productions and Programs
The theatre hosts a diverse range of productions, catering to different age groups and interests. Recent examples include children's productions like The Lion King Jr. and more classic works such as A Night of Classic Broadway[4][5]. The theatre encourages community involvement by offering roles for volunteers and performers alike, fostering a strong sense of community engagement in the arts.
