National Slovak Society of the USA
The National Slovak Society of the USA is a nonprofit organization founded on February 15, 1890, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Initially known as the National Slavonic Society of the United States, it was renamed in 1913 to the National Slovak Society of the United States of America. The society was established by Peter Vitazoslav Rovnianek, who envisioned a non-sectarian organization where Slovaks from diverse backgrounds could unite for their mutual benefit[1][2].
Founding and Purpose
The founding meeting took place at Walther's Hall in Allegheny Township, now part of Pittsburgh's North Side, with delegates from five Slovak societies attending. The initial goals included uniting Slovaks in a fraternal benefit society, preserving their cultural heritage, promoting benevolence, and supporting the homeland[2][3].
History
Over the years, the society has played a significant role in promoting Slovak culture and supporting its members. By the end of 1894, membership had grown to over 5,000. The society's growth peaked with more than 42,000 adult members and 19,000 youth members during its height. However, membership declined following World War II[2].
Leadership and Milestones
The society has had several notable leaders, including Peter V. Rovnianek, Anton S. Ambrose, and Joseph Stefka Jr. It achieved significant milestones, such as reaching $1 billion in assets. The society marked its 100th and 125th anniversaries with celebrations in Pittsburgh[2].
Mission and Activities
The National Slovak Society of the USA focuses on fostering fraternal bonds, cultural preservation, and humanitarian efforts. It supports Slovaks both in the United States and abroad, promoting their traditions and contributing to the welfare of the community[3].
