Millay House Rockland is a nonprofit organization dedicated to celebrating the legacy of Edna St. Vincent Millay, a Pulitzer Prize-winning poet born in Rockland, Maine, on February 22, 1892. The organization aims to champion poets and artists, promote education in the literary and fine arts, and contribute to the cultural heritage of midcoast Maine.

Mission

Millay House Rockland focuses on rejuvenating the literary landmark that is Edna St. Vincent Millay's birthplace, located at 198-200 Broadway in Rockland. The house, originally built in 1891, has been restored and repurposed as a center for literary and educational programs, serving all ages. Through partnerships with cultural organizations and universities, the organization offers educational opportunities, writers-in-residence programs, and outreach activities to foster artistic creativity.

History and Restoration

In the early 20th century, the Women's Educational Club of Rockland recognized the significance of Millay's birthplace by installing a bronze plaque to commemorate the poet. However, over time, the house fell into disrepair. In 2015, a local initiative began to restore the house, with significant fundraising efforts in 2016 and 2017 leading to its exterior renovation. By 2021, interior restoration commenced, and as of mid-2022, the south side of the house was nearing completion, intended for use by writers-in-residence and other programs.

Programs and Activities

Millay House Rockland offers a variety of programs, including the Writer-in-Residence initiative. This program provides one-month residencies for writers, supporting their work with a stipend and accommodation in the renovated house. Residents are encouraged to engage with the local community through public events such as readings and workshops.

Governance and Legal Status

Millay House Rockland operates as a tax-exempt public charity under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. This status enables donations to be tax-deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law. The organization is governed by a board of directors committed to advancing its mission and preserving Edna St. Vincent Millay's legacy.
