Swamp Dogg Gets His Pool Painted screens Friday night at SPACE! It’s a must-see music documentary about who else but the legendary musician Swamp Dogg, who’s been described as “one of the great cult figures of 20th century American music” and “the soul genius time forgot.” A genuine eccentric responsible for some of the most unique rock-influenced R&B (and wildest album covers) ever made, his life and stories make for an incredibly compelling film. Pavements is a movie about Pavement the band — among many other things. Screening June 14 at SPACE, the latest film from acclaimed director Alex Ross Perry (Her Smell) is a documentary that may or may not be entirely true, may or may not be totally sincere, and may or may not be more about the idea of the band — or any band — than a history of the short-lived, passionately loved, commercially marginal ‘90s American alternative group Pavement. This unconventional film about a highly unconventional band incorporates a stage musical, rock biopic, gallery exhibition, archival footage, and contemporary observational footage to create a film as irreducible, uncharacterizable, and entertaining as the band and its music. Anchored by Pavement’s slacker-sage-sphinx, Stephen Malkmus, the film features performances by Joe Keery, Jason Schwartzman, Tim Heidecker, Kathryn Gallagher, Michael Esper and Zoe Lister-Jones, and editing by nonfiction innovator Robert Greene (Procession). June 14 • Sat 7 pm, doors at 6:30 Pavements 🎞️ dir. @alexrossperry • 128 min. $10, $7 for SPACE members #portlandmaine (fb)
