At 72, Barbara Moe was embracing retirement to the fullest — hiking, walking and exploring national parks with her husband. With 38 national parks checked off their list, Barbara didn’t plan to slow down — until she noticed something unusual: pink-colored urine. Though she felt no pain, the change prompted her to seek medical attention. A follow-up CAT scan revealed a suspicious mass in her bladder and a biopsy confirmed it was cancer. She was referred to Dr. Johar Raza, our urologic oncologist and director of the bladder cancer program. He recommended surgery to remove her bladder, followed by reconstructive surgery to create a new urinary pathway. “I had many emotions about what would come next, but Dr. Raza said, ‘I have a plan for you.’ There weren’t any guarantees, but I felt reassured knowing I was in the hands of a skilled team.” Barbara’s treatment included 4 cycles of chemotherapy and immunotherapy, coordinated by Dr. Clara Hwang, our medical oncologist who specializes in bladder cancer. After completing chemotherapy and receiving an encouraging, tumor-free scan, our director of reconstructive surgery Dr. Nabeel Shakir performed an ileal conduit diversion using a section of Barbara’s small intestine to allow urine to exit through the abdomen. “The most crucial thing here is that like pieces of a puzzle, everything came together perfectly.” says Dr. Raza. “Now Barbara and her husband are back travelling across the country, exploring national parks and enjoying their favorite hobby." Barbara reflected on her journey: “This experience has taught me that a positive attitude and hope, even in despair, can significantly impact your journey.
