Support for Prison Ministries

Support for Prison Ministries (SFPM) is a growing inter-denominational nonprofit organization in the United States, primarily focused on contracting chaplain services for prisons and youth intervention centers.

History

The organization's roots can be traced back to the involvement of various Christian groups in local prison ministries, particularly in the Lancaster area. In the 1970s, Mennonite church leaders began conducting regular Bible studies at Lancaster County Prison as part of the Lancaster Offenders Ministries Council. By the 1980s, a more organized chaplain program was established by the Lancaster County Council of Churches. Over time, Support for Prison Ministries formalized its structure, receiving 501(c)(3) charity status in 1988. The organization took over administrative responsibilities for the prison chaplaincy from the Lancaster County Council of Churches in March 1993.

Mission and Programs

The mission of SFPM is to provide spiritual support and guidance to incarcerated individuals and their families. It achieves this by:

  • Chaplain Services: SFPM contracts chaplains to serve at institutions such as the Lancaster County Prison and the Lancaster County Youth Intervention Center.
  • Training and Education: The organization offers training and educational programs for local churches and community groups to raise awareness and promote involvement in prison ministry.
  • Community Engagement: SFPM encourages volunteerism and mentorship, particularly for spiritual advisers to inmates without church connections.
  • Aftercare Programs: The organization collaborates with faith-based aftercare ministries in Lancaster County that provide support for both men and women transitioning out of incarceration.

Values and Funding

SFPM relies heavily on prayer support, financial contributions, and community involvement to sustain its programs. With an annual budget of approximately $400,000, the organization requires ongoing donations from churches, businesses, and individuals. Prayer is considered foundational to the success of its initiatives.

Leadership and Development

Nelson Martin served as the first paid director of SFPM, contributing significantly to its organizational structure and outreach efforts. Following his retirement, Del Burkholder took over as director, expanding SFPM's reach through mergers with other ministries. In 2018, SFPM began supporting chaplaincy services in Schuylkill County.

Impact and Expansion

Support for Prison Ministries continues to grow, with a focus on providing spiritual guidance and second chances to those within the criminal justice system. Its chaplains and volunteers are dedicated to making a positive impact in the lives of incarcerated individuals and their families, extending across communities beyond Lancaster County.
