The institute is founded on a holistic, cultural approach rooted in the philosophy of "La Cultura Cura," which emphasizes traditional values of respect, honor, love, and family. Its mission is to engage youth, elders, and communities by drawing from their own roots and histories.

History and Founder

La Plazita Institute was founded by Albino Garcia Jr., who serves as its Executive Director. Garcia's background includes seven years of military service and extensive experience in community development. He created the organization to provide a comprehensive approach to youth and community development.

Programs and Services

La Plazita Institute offers a range of programs and services aimed at improving the lives of vulnerable youth and families. Key initiatives include:

  • Cultural Restorative Justice: The institute focuses on reducing disparities in incarceration and recidivism through culturally relevant methods.
  • Agriculture, Conservation, and Economic Self-Sustainability: It manages La Plazita Gardens at Sanchez Farm, a 300-year-old farm where community members cultivate plots and grow organic produce for local markets and schools.
  • Community Learning and Non-Traditional Leadership: Programs are designed to foster leadership and provide education in areas such as literacy and computer skills.
  • Traditional and Spiritual Healing Services: These services offer traditional ceremonial processes for urban Indigenous families and incarcerated individuals.
