Overview

The Avian Underdogs Rescue Association (AURA) is a non-profit organization based in Southern California and holds the status of a 501(c)(3) public charity (EIN: 81-2993330). The organization focuses on rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming birds that are often overlooked by other wildlife rescue groups due to regulatory restrictions.

Mission and Activities

AURA's mission is to provide essential care to sick, injured, and orphaned birds, particularly those not protected under state or federal law. This includes species like English House Sparrows, European Starlings, feral and domestic pigeons and doves, Nutmeg Mannikins, Pin-tailed Whydahs, Japanese White Eyes, and various parrot species. The organization serves as a critical resource for these avian "underdogs," which might otherwise find no assistance from traditional wildlife centers.

AURA provides hands-on care and transportation services to ensure that birds receive the necessary care to recover and thrive. Each year, the organization assists between 600 to 800 birds, offering them a second chance at a healthy life.

Adoption Services

Beyond rescue and rehabilitation, AURA also facilitates adoptions for the birds in their care. They have a variety of birds available for adoption, including parrotlets, conures, and African Greys. Potential adopters must demonstrate the ability to provide suitable environments and care for these animals, often requiring patience and time to help socialize or re-socialize birds.

Volunteer Opportunities

In addition to its core services, AURA welcomes volunteers to help with various aspects of bird care and rehabilitation. This involvement contributes significantly to the organization's capacity to provide comprehensive support to these birds. Volunteers assist in day-to-day operations, which can include bird handling, feeding, and providing enrichment activities.

By combining rescue efforts with community engagement, AURA fosters a compassionate network of people dedicated to the welfare of often-overlooked bird species, ensuring they receive the care they need to flourish.
