Presenting..... Arrowleaf Balsamroot (Ballsamorhiza sagitatta), our Wilflower of the Week! This showy yellow sunflower has woody, starchy, and deep taproots that allow them to live in dry places and survive fires. This combined with the fact that all parts of the plant are edible makes them an important food source for deer and elk. Historically, they were used by tribes in the area for making flour. Remember- please do not pick or harvest this or any other wildflower on Forest Service land. Leave them be and Leave No Trace! You can see this plant blooming now in many parts of the foothills: check out the Bonneville Shoreline Trail between Millcreek and Big Cottonwood or the new West Grandeur to Pipeline Overlook connector trail to see this flower blooming this week! 🌻 (fb)

Introducing our Wildflower of the Week, steer's head (Dicentra uniflora). Steer's head is the only native member of the bleeding heart genus in Utah. They flower in early spring as the snow melts and soil thaws. Dicentra translated from Greek means, " two spurred." Fleshy appendages (elaiosomes) attached to their seeds attract ants as a food for larvae. The transport of these seeds to ant nests serves as an effective dispersal method. Keep your eyes out on Mt. Olympus, Neff's, Mill B, and Broads Fork this week 🐮 (fb)
