Today a memory popped up of a very Special Wolf Pup 967M. He was born in April of 2014 into The Lamar Canyon Pack which consisted of 8 wolves; 2 adults, and 6 pups. The Lamar's started with only a pair of wolves in early 2014 our Beloved Queen 926F and her beloved mate 925M, and the Pack increased in size when 926F produced a litter of seven pups, of which six lived through the end of the year.. 967M was collared when he was only about eight months old in December of 2014. He had a very tight bond with his siblings especially his brother who we called "Little Gray" and with his father 925M. On March 8th 2015 we saw first hand just what a bond they had. On that fateful day the Lamar's had traveled on a hunting trip, as they were returning back to their territory they ran right into a rival Pack called the Prospect Peak Pack. The Lamar's were out numbered, 926F was pregnant and they had six eleven month old pups up against a rival Pack of twelve wolves. Lamar Canyon Alpha Male 925M did the only thing he could do to save his family and he ran straight towards the rival Pack to give his mate 926F and pups time to run away. 925M knew he couldn't defend himself against all those wolves but he did it anyway because 925M loved his family. Those twelve wolves were all over 925M, but when his two sons 967M and Little Gray turned around and saw what was happening, 967M without hesitation ran straight toward his father and the wolves attacking him and at the last second veered off so that some of those wolves would chase him and it worked, so Little Gray did the same thing and ran straight towards his father and the rival pack and veered off at the last second, and more of the wolves chased him. 967M and Little Gray were able t get away but their father was not as lucky. 925M was mortally wounded but was able to get up and move away. Sometime during the night 926F gathered up her Pups and scent trailed and she found her mate 925M, The whole family was with 925M, 967M and Little Gray were Hero's these young pups doing what they could to save their father, but sadly 925M died from his injuries, but he died a hero, and he died with his family at his side so he knew his family was safe. 925M sacrificed his own life to save the family he loved, and his Pups put themselves in danger to save their dad. I get choked up every time I think about this story, but it shows how much these wolves will go through to love and protect their families.
