CURESZ Foundation

The CURESZ Foundation is a U.S. nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing public understanding of schizophrenia as a treatable neuropsychiatric illness. It offers advocacy, information, advice, as well as educational and supportive resources.

Mission

The Foundation's mission is to provide comprehensive understanding via research and education into schizophrenia. It aims to educate medical students, mental health professionals, patients, families, and the general public about schizophrenia and related psychoses.

History

Established in 2016, the CURESZ Foundation was co-founded by Bethany Yeiser and Dr. Henry A. Nasrallah. Bethany Yeiser, the current president of the Foundation, is a prominent figure in schizophrenia recovery, achieving full recovery from the condition herself with the help of clozapine. Her journey from severe schizophrenia to full recovery has inspired many and led to the creation of the Foundation.

Programs and Initiatives

The CURESZ Foundation offers several programs and resources to support individuals affected by schizophrenia:

  • Caregivers Mentoring Program: This initiative, founded by Board Member Mary Beth De Bord, pairs caregivers of schizophrenia patients with experienced mentors, currently serving over 75 pairs.
  • Support Groups: The Foundation provides support groups for individuals with schizophrenia and their families.
  • Ask the Doctor Events: These events offer a platform for individuals to discuss schizophrenia-related questions and concerns with medical experts.
  • On-campus Clubs: The Foundation supports educational programs in universities to raise awareness about schizophrenia.

Publications and Media

The Foundation publishes a book titled Awakenings: Stories of Recovery and Emergence from Schizophrenia, which shares stories of individuals who have achieved significant recovery. Additionally, the Foundation maintains a YouTube channel where they share educational content and personal stories of recovery.

Board of Directors

As of 2019, the board includes prominent figures such as Bethany Yeiser, Dr. Henry Nasrallah, and other dedicated professionals in the field of mental health.

Funding and Research

The CURESZ Foundation raises money to support qualitative research projects focusing on risk factors for schizophrenia, coping strategies for patients and families, and strategies to eliminate stigma associated with mental illness.

Impact

By providing educational resources, advocating for treatment options like clozapine, and offering support mechanisms, the CURESZ Foundation aims to improve the quality of life for individuals with schizophrenia and their families. It serves as a beacon of hope, challenging the stigma often associated with mental illnesses and encouraging full recovery for those affected.
